The 53rd annual Grammy Awards were held on February 13, 2011, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. All underlined titles below are in the Library's collection.

Smithsonian Folkways

The CKUA Radio Network presents Smithsonian Folkways: Sounds to Grow On, a new 26-part series featuring the original recordings of the Folkways Collection, now a cornerstone of Smithsonian Folkways Records' vast catalogue. This series, hosted by Michael Asch, the only child of Folkways Records' founder Moses Asch, and researched by Robert Wiznura, is a co-production of The Smithsonian Women's Committee, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, folkwaysAlive! at the University of Alberta, and the CKUA Radio Network.

 

Grammy Nominations!

Nirvana's album "Nevermind" is 20 years old.

This past weekend was a hallmark for modern rock music. It was the 20 year anniversary for the release of the classic Nirvana album, "Nevermind".

Tenor Salvatore Licitra

 

 

Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra died on Monday after nine days in a coma following motorcycle in Southern Sicily in August, just days after his 43rd birthday.  Considered by many as one of the leading tenors of his generation, Licitra was scheduled to sing the lead tenor role in Aida in the Lyric Opera’s 2011-2012 season.

Chicago Jazz Festival

The 33rd Chicago Jazz Festival will run September 1-4 in multiple locations in and around Millennium Park. The Library has CDs by many of the artists performing this year. Here are a few:

London riot fire destroys European stock of several Chicago record labels.

London has been going through a series of riots over the last week. Cars have been flipped, buildings have been razed, and people have gotten hurt. So far, over 700 people have been arrested and millions of dollars worth of property damage has occured.

Chuck Berry honored with a statue.

On July 29th, guitarist and rock pioneer Chuck Berry was honored in his native town of St. Louis with an eight foot tall statue.
