1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
One library's creative progam has become a nationwide sensation - read one thousand books before kindergarten!
We gerbils know that sounds like a lot, but if you read one book to or with your child every day for a year, you are already over a third of the way there! You can even repeat books - repetition is the key to learning and it's always fun to listen to a loved story again. Every book your child listens to counts - ones heard in storytime, ones listened to on the computer, iPad or ereader, library books or books you own at home.
Families who read aloud to their children at birth and beyond help to strengthen language skills and build vocabulary, two important skills for beginning to learn to read when they enter kindergarten. Sharing books together also fosters a lifelong love of reading.
So how do we participate?
