Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
January 21st - MLK Day. This year marks the 50th anniversary in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech, advocating racial harmony during The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The march is widely credited with helping to pass the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965).
If Martin Luther King Jr. had a favorite opening act, it was Mahalia Jackson, who performed by his side many times. On August 28th, 1963, as she took to the podium before an audience of 250,000 to give the last musical performance before Dr. King's famous speech, Dr. King himself requested that she sing the gospel classic "I've Been 'Buked, and I've Been Scorned."
