What is One-on-One Tech Help?

One-on-One Tech Help is a free appointment-based service for customized tech help. A Library staff member will meet with you for a one-hour session to cover complex questions. You will be contacted within 3 business days (Monday-Friday) to schedule a time for your session after initial request.

Typical sessions may include:

  • Introduction to the library catalog – how to find materials, place holds, and manage your account.
  • Research a topic using the Library's online databases.
  • The use of the Library's electronic resources for eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, music and video streaming. 
  • Computer skills such as Internet basics, managing files and folders, setting up email accounts, and social media platforms.
  • Trainig on the equpiment and software available in the Digital Media Lab 
  • Gettings started using the Library's 3D printer.

Is there any kind of help I can’t get?
Library staff cannot offer advice (except to advise you of reputable sources of evaluative information) or provide data entry for medical, legal, financial, business or personal transactions (contracts, agreements, enrollments, applications, online purchases, travel bookings, etc). Also, we are unable to set-up or install software on your personal devices. 

What are the procedures to set up an appointment?
Highland Park Public Library adult cardholders can request apointments up to 7 days in advanced. Non-Highland Park Public Library cardholders can schedule appointments based on staff availability and up to 3 days in advanced. 
Sessions are typically 30 minutes to one hour.
You may have up to one session a week

How do I schedule a session?
Complete the Tech Help form with as much information as possible. Library staff will get in touch with you to discuss your topic and to schedule an appointment time. Appointments will be scheduled wihtin three (3) business days (Monday-Friday) after initial request.

I need to cancel my session. What’s the best way to do this?
Call the Media Services department at 847.681.7032 or send an email to newmeddept@hplibrary.org. Library staff will help you cancel or reschedule your session.

Where do I go to check in for my session?
Check in at the Computers & Technology desk in the Adult Services room.
