Bob Coscarelli, professor emeritus at College of Lake County, introduces the film and leads the discussion after the showing.
During the 1960s the film studios were collapsing and the industry was looking for ways to appeal to a younger generation. Our spring film series will discuss the dramatic changes that were occurring in the film industry by looking at four new style film musicals: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, La La Land, Xanadu, and Yentl.
Yentl, a 1983 dramatic musical film, was cowritten, produced, directed by and starred Barbra Streisand. Set in 1904 Poland, Yentl disguises herself as a man in order to pursue a Talmudic education. Yentl, as a man, finds herself in an arranged marriage to a woman, who starts falling in love with Yentl. Yentl, in turn, falls in love with the man who loves Yentl's wife. With Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving, this film is loosely based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy."
Opening doors to information and imagination.
