Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 masterpiece cowritten and directed by Billy Wilder. William Holden as young, struggling screenwriter Joe happens upon the home of faded, forgotten silent film star Norma Desmond, played by Gloria Swanson. Joe moves into Norma's household, ostensibly to help her hone a script that will become her comeback film. Their relationship becomes complicated when Joe realizes that the older Norma has become infatuated with him. Nominated for eleven Academy Awards and winning three, the film also stars Erich von Stroheim as Norma's faithful manservant, Max. "We didn't need dialogue. We had faces."
