Judy Levin moderates the discussion of THE LAKE ON FIRE by Rosellen Brown. In 1891, Chaya Shaderowsky fled to Chicago with her younger brother Asher to escape an arranged marriage. The siblings immigrated with their family to Wisconsin from the Ukraine to work on a collective farm. Penniless and naive, the two start a new life with Chaya working in a cigar factory and Asher becoming a cunning, Robin Hoodish shoplifter and thief. Soon Chaya is being courted by the handsome Gregory Stillman and the intelligent Asher is drawn to the new University and the shining brilliance of the Columbian Expedition.
