Jim Marquardt, Professor of Politics and International Relations at Lake Forest College, will lecture on the foreign policy implications of the upcoming election.
The outcome of the 2024 presidential election will determine the course of U.S. foreign policy for the next four years – and possibly beyond.
A Harris victory would see the continuation of President Biden’s commitment to American global leadership, cooperation with other countries on critical issues like climate change, closer ties with the U.S.’s democratic allies, managed competition with China, and support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
A Trump victory would accelerate trends from the former president’s first term and result in policies favoring “isolationism,” such as the possible withdrawal of the U.S. from the military command of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Paris Agreement on climate change, and the World Trade Organization. Trump would also compel Ukraine to accept an unfavorable (and unstable) peace with Russia.
Both Harris and Trump would continue U.S. military assistance to Israel, but politically Harris would likely embrace policies supportive of Palestinian self-determination.
