Judy Levin moderates the discussion of THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN by Lisa See. On the Korean island of Jeju, two girls have just become members of the haenyeo, their island’s prestigious female diving collective, as baby divers. Best friends Min-ja and Young-sook come from drastically different backgrounds, but it never bothered them because of their love for each other.  As they grow older, however, their differences become impossible to ignore. The Island of Sea Women is an epic set over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War and its aftermath, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers.
