Join us each month to discuss a film and/or film genre. Movies for the program are selected from titles the library has available either via our physical collection or digitally. Also, we have snacks.

This month, we'll be discussing the character Hannibal Lecter in film and his impact on pop culture. The focus will be on the films The Silence of The Lambs and Manhunter but other films and shows in the franchise will be discussed.  

In his 1981 book, Red Dragon, Thomas Harris introduced the world to his fictional creation Hannibal Lecter. The book was adapted into Michael Mann's 1986 cult classic Manhunter with Brian Cox playing the brilliant and sinister Lecter. Harris continued to explore the character in several books including his 1988 sequel novel The Silence of The Lambs, which was made into the sensationally successful thriller of the same name in 1991 with Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal. His performance was iconic, leading to him continuing to be cast in the role multiple times in the years that followed. Most recently, Mads Mikkelsen has played Lecter in the critically acclaimed thriller series Hannibal. The character's popularity and audience’s fascination with clever and charismatic killers has clearly not diminished. October being the spooky season, we'll be discussing Manhunter and The Silence of The Lambs. We'll also likely touch on the other content in the franchise; talking about the lasting impact of the character and similar cinematic monsters in popular culture.

Guests are welcome to also watch the other films in the franchise and the TV series as those are sure to be discussed. But this is not required. Also worth mentioning, guests do not necessarily have to watch both main movies we'll be focusing on.  

Join us each month to discuss a film, genre or franchise. Movies for this program are selected from titles the library has available either in our physical collection or available digitally via Hoopla or Kanopy beforehand. Watch, then join us to discuss each month’s title or genre. Snacks provided by the library.
