David Pickus, a traveler, teacher, historian and Highland Park native, will talk about a phenomenal but little known Chinese achievement, the Grand Canal.
Dating from 468 B.C and stretching 1115 miles from Beijing to Hangzhou, China's Grand Canal is the oldest and longest man-made canal in the world. Highland Park native David Pickus, a professor in the Global Engagement Program at Zhejiang University, will discuss how the Grand Canal brought China together as a nation, as opposed to the better-known Great Wall, which was built to keep others out.
