Chado, or the Way of Tea, is one of the most ancient and revered arts of Japan, and is at the very heart of Japan House's mission. Watch and participate as a guest in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony to learn about Japan House on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the history of this 500 year old art form and its practice in modern times as a living art.
After a brief talk about the history of Japanese tea ceremony and its connections to various Japanese arts and traditions, Education Associate Diana Liao will demonstrate a tea ceremony. There will be a Q&A session afterward. 20 guests will be able to enjoy a bowl of matcha tea and wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets).
Diana Liao received the Illinois Arts Council Agency Ethnic & Folk Arts Master/Apprentice Program Award in 2021 for Japanese Tea Ceremony with Professor Kimiko Gunji. She has been studying the Urasenke School of Tea with Professor Gunji since 2015 and she is also the manager of Chado Urasenke Tankokai Urbana-Champaign Association.
