Event at Makom Solel Lakeside, 1301 Clavey Road, Highland Park. Historian Leslie Goddard explores the making of the film, the controversy with the film, and the Jewish influence on its creation.
More than 85 years after its blockbuster premiere in 1939, Gone With the Wind remains one of the most famous films ever made. With ticket sales translated into modern dollars, it’s the world’s all-time box office champion. Historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores the making of the film, the controversy surrounding it -- how whitewashing the horrors of slavery is deeply problematic and inherent to the film -- and the Jewish influence on its creation. She discusses a number of Jews involved in the film's creation including visionary producer David O. Selznick, composer Max Steiner, actor Leslie Howard, and initial director George Cukor. How did their Jewish backgrounds impact the film’s creation and its enduring popularity?
